Tracy became acquainted with western Montana white studying Biology as an undergraduate at the University of Montana, and later as an instructor of college field courses in the northern Rocky Mountains. She subsequently spent many years traveling throughout South America, Asia, Mexico, and New Zealand as a scientist, whitewater kayak guide, and teacher.

Tracy holds a PhD in Aquatic Ecology from Utah State University, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher and instructor at the University of Idaho. Her research interests include population ecology, stream restoration, and aquatic species conservation. Tracy enjoys spending time in mountains and on rivers.
